Our House Captains and Vice Captains have researched each of the different figures and you can find out more below.
Owain Glyndwr
Owain Glyndwr was born in 1359 into an important family. He was born during a time of peace between Wales and England. His father, Gruffydd Fychan ll, was a prince and his mother, Elen Ferch Tomas also had noble blood. However, a terrible tragedy happened when Owain was 11 years old, his father died! So he was fostered with Sir David Hanmer, a judge. Owain followed Hanmer’s profession by going to study law but he did not become a man of law. Instead, he married Hanmer’s daughter, Margaret, in 1383, which meant he was also a Squire. In 1385, military service called Owain and he fought for King Richard ll. In Owain’s life, he was a Welsh leader, a soldier, a military commander in the late Middle Ages, who led a 15-year-long Welsh revolt, trying to end English rule in Wales. Owain Glwndwr led a brave life and died on 20th September, 1415 (age 61 years).
Caradog ap Grufudd
Prince Caradog was born in 1028 in Gwynllwg and became the Prince of Gwent in South Wales, around the time of the Norman conquest. He fought many fights, mostly against his enemy, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.
Caradog was the grandson of the king of Glywysing, Rhydderch ap Iestyn.
In a fierce battle near Glasbury in 1056,Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was victorious. In 1057 Gruffydd was recognised as the King of Wales and Caradog received Caerleon.
Caradog made an alliance with the King of Gwynedd, Trahaearn ap Caradog .The two of them met in battle at Mynydd Carn, about a days' march north of St David's. Sadly, both Caradog and his ally Trahaearn were killed in battle.
Llewelyn the Great
Llewelyn the Great
Llewelyn the Great was one of the most famous and powerful princes of Gwynedd Llewelyn became leader of Gwynedd around 1200.
His first move was to make a treaty with King John of England. In 1205 Llewelyn married King John’s daughter her name was Joan. The peace between the two countries lasted around ten years. But then King John became concerned about Llewelyn’s fast-growing power, so he invaded all of Llewelyn’s land and took it all from him. John's army swept along Gwynedd in 1211.
Llewelyn was forced to surrender. He then had to give away most of his land and all of his castles he and his men had taken ages to build!
The following year Llewelyn formed a group with other Welsh princes. He went to battle and he won! He got all of his land he lost back! By 1216 Llewelyn was the most powerful leader in Wales!
Llewelyn and John made peace in 1240 which lasted until Llewelyn passed away. He died in Aberconwy Abbey, on the 11th April 1240.
